Expected Learning Outcomes

Acquisition of basic knowledge of European, national and regional legislation on wildlife conservation. Concepts and principles of management and nature conservation. Knowledge of the main threats to wildlife and natural environments and habitats. Acquisition of the main methods used to wildlife monitoring aimed at environmental planning, conservation of natural resources and environmental restoration. Alien invasives species.

Course Structure

Lectures and practical exercises in field. 

Required Prerequisites

Basic knowledge on the principles of zoological systematics and animal ecology.

Detailed Course Content

- Populations in decline and at risk of extinction; species threatened on a global and local scale, IUCN red lists; 

 - Alien species; DAISIE database; methods, problems and risks of fauna globalization; 

 - Conservation and management strategies of fauna through systems of protected areas and ecological networks with particular reference to the Mediterranean area; 

 - Conservation strategies at global and local level; 

- Regional, national, community and international legislation; 

 - Territorial planning and conservation of fauna.
